Applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to habitat assessment and marine resource management ArchiMer
Stanbury, Kb; Starr, Rm.
Marine scientists often assess habitats to understand the distribution and relative abundance of marine resources. Due to the spatial nature of habitats and associated temporal changes, however, assimilating data using traditional analytical methods is often difficult. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are proving to be effective tools to help address problems inherent in the analysis of spatial data. GIS can be used to effectively collate, archive, display, analyze, and model spatial and temporal data. Additionally, by combining dissimilar data types, such as socio-political boundaries, bottom types, and fish distributions, for example, resource managers can use GIS to make informed management decisions. In this way, GIS provides resource managers with...

Coastal habitat mapping of Bahía Aguacate and bahía Cupica, northern Colombian Pacific coast Boletín de Investigaciones
Silvar,Paula; Giraldo,Alan.
ABSTRACT Colombian North Pacific region host a huge valuable ecosystem due to its particular conditions. Some of these sectors are isolated and pristine, with little research effort. When there is a limitation of economic resources, classification and basic mapping techniques of the intertidal and subtidal habitats allow the identification of distinct and representative areas of a region. Previous studies point out the zones of Cabo Marzo- Bahia Aguacate and Punta Cruces- Bahia Cupica as ecologically important areas, therefore the present study focus on habitat mapping these sites. To create the map, we develop a hierarchical classification of intertidal and subtidal habitats separately. In conclusion, Colombian North Pacific region is extremely...

Design and application of a stratified sampling strategy to study the regional distribution of cyanobacteria (Ile-de-France, France) ArchiMer
Catherine, A; Troussellier, Marc; Bernard, C.
This study describes the design and application of a stratified sampling strategy of waterbodies to assess and analyze the distribution of cyanobacteria at a regional scale (Ile-de-France, IDF). Ten groups of hydrographical zones were defined within the IDF on the basis of their anthropogenic and geomorphologic characteristics. Sampling effort (n = 50) was then randomly allocated according to the number of waterbodies in each group. This sampling strategy was tested in August 2006, using a field probe to estimate total phyto-plankton as well as cyanobacteria biomasses. The sampled waterbodies exhibited a wide range of phytoplankton (<1-375 mu g equiv.Chla L-1) and cyanobacteria biomasses (<1-278 mu g equiv. Chla L-1). 72% of the waterbodies in the...

Estimating okra leaf area index using unmanned aerial vehicle imagery CIGR Journal
Kumi, Francis; Adade, Richard; Darko, Ransford Opoku; Ekumah, Bernard; Osei, Gilbert.
The study aimed at estimating the leaf area index of okra using vegetative indices obtained by analysing image data obtained from a low-cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in Ghana. Additionally, the work also assessed which of the two indices commonly used (excess green (ExG) and normalized green-red difference index (NGRDI) ) gave a better estimation of leaf area indices. The study was conducted in Cape Coast in southern Ghana at the experimental site located on the University of Cape Coast’s Teaching and Research Farm. The experiment was arranged in a randomised complete block design (RCBD) with four treatments (2cm, 3cm, 5cm and 7cm sowing depths) and four replicate blocks. This resulted in sixteen (16) plots each measuring 3 m by 3m. Overall, it was...

Geostatistical Approach for Spatial Interpolation of Meteorological Data Anais da ABC (AABC)
OZTURK,DERYA; KILIC,FATMAGUL.
ABSTRACT Meteorological data are used in many studies, especially in planning, disaster management, water resources management, hydrology, agriculture and environment. Analyzing changes in meteorological variables is very important to understand a climate system and minimize the adverse effects of the climate changes. One of the main issues in meteorological analysis is the interpolation of spatial data. In recent years, with the developments in Geographical Information System (GIS) technology, the statistical methods have been integrated with GIS and geostatistical methods have constituted a strong alternative to deterministic methods in the interpolation and analysis of the spatial data. In this study; spatial distribution of precipitation and...

Identification, assessment and ordering of concepts for agro-energy planning and possibilities of spatial analysis REA
Cervi,Walter R.; Lamparelli,Rubens; Berni,Mauro; Rocha,Jansle.
ABSTRACT The present study aims to present the main concepts of the sugarcane straw to energy planning. Throughout the study, the subject is contextualized highlighting broader aspects of sustainability, which is considered the main driver towards agro-energy modernization. Concerning sugarcane straw, we first evaluated its availability regarding technical and economic aspects, and then it summarized the straw production chain for energy supply purposes. As a proposal to support agro-energy planning, it is presented some spatial tools that have been barely used in the Brazilian energy planning context so far. Therefore, working on straw to electricity associated with supply chain basis, we developed a conceptual model to spatially assess this bioenergy...

Influences of the area, shape and connectivity of coastal lakes on the taxonomic and functional diversity of fish communities in Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Hartz,Sandra M.; Rocha,Elise A.; Brum,Fernanda T.; Luza,André L.; F.R.,Taís de; Becker,Fernando G..
ABSTRACT In this study we investigated the influence of landscape variables on the alpha taxonomic and functional diversity of fish communities in coastal lakes. We built an analytical framework that included possible causal connections among variables, which we analyzed using path analysis. We obtained landscape metrics for the area, shape and connectivity (estuary connectivity and primary connectivity to neighboring lakes) of 37 coastal lakes in the Tramandaí River Basin. We collected fish data from 49 species using standardized sampling with gillnets and obtained a set of traits related to dispersal abilities and food acquisition. The model that best explained the taxonomic diversity and functional richness took into account the shape of the lakes....

Mazza,Carlos Alberto da Silva; Mazza,Maria Cristina Medeiros; Almeida,Dayana; Santos,José Eduardo dos; Fushita,Angela Terumi.
ABSTRACT An environmental zoning proposal due to the demand to develop strategies to ensure biodiversity scenarios for the remaining mixed ombrophilous forests was carried out for the Irati National Forest, a legally protected area for sustainable use located in southern Brazil. To identify land use and cover, Ikonos PSM images dated from December 2004, based on the interpretation of visual character and vectorization of orbital data were used. Qualitative and quantitative classifications identified six types of land and cover use: native forest, forestry, capoeira grass, wetland, araucaria plantation, and anthropic. The native forest relative to the mixed ombrophilous forest was the prevailing type of land cover. The environmental zoning proposal defined...

Modeling and Prediction of Future Urban Growth in the Charleston Region of South Carolina: a GIS-based Integrated Approach Ecology and Society
Allen, Jeffery; Clemson University; jeff@strom.clemson.edu; Lu, Kang; Clemson University; klu@strom.clemson.edu.
The complexity of urban systems makes it difficult to adequately address their changes using a model based on a single approach. In this research, we developed a GIS-based integrated approach to modeling and prediction of urban growth in terms of land use change. The model was built upon a binomial logistic framework, coupled with a rule-based suitability module and focus group involvement, and is designed to predict land transition probabilities and simulate urban growth under different scenarios. The model was calibrated in the Charleston region of South Carolina through a GIS-facilitated participatory process involving both statistical assessment and human evaluation. The model achieved high overall success rates, although its predictive power varied...

Morphometry and mixing regime of a tropical lake: Lake Nova (Southeastern Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
GONÇALVES,MONICA A.; GARCIA,FÁBIO C.; BARROSO,GILBERTO F..
ABSTRACT Lake Nova (15.5 km2) is the second largest lake in the Lower Doce River Valley (Southeastern Brazil). A better understanding of ecosystem structure and functioning requires knowledge about lake morphometry, given that lake basin form influences water column stratification. The present study aims to contribute to the understanding of relationship between morphometry and mixing patterns of deep tropical lakes in Brazil. Water column profiles of temperature and dissolved oxygen were taken on four sampling sites along the lake major axis during 2011, 2012 and 2013. The bathymetric survey was carried out in July 2011, along 131.7 km of hydrographic tracks yield 51,692 depth points. Morphometric features of lake size and form factors describe the...

Rainfall erosivity for the State of Rio de Janeiro estimated by artificial neural network REA
Carvalho,Daniel F. de; Khoury Júnior,Joseph K.; Varella,Carlos A. A.; Giori,Jacqueline Z.; Machado,Roriz L..
The Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are mathematical models method capable of estimating non-linear response plans. The advantage of these models is to present different responses of the statistical models. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop and to test ANNs for estimating rainfall erosivity index (EI30) as a function of the geographical location for the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and generating a thematic visualization map. The characteristics of latitude, longitude e altitude using ANNs were acceptable to estimating EI30 and allowing visualization of the space variability of EI30. Thus, ANN is a potential option for the estimate of climatic variables in substitution to the traditional methods of interpolation.
